Hidden in the sculpted canyons on shear faces of sandstone, ancient and rare works of art preside over this timeless landscape. These red polychrome figures belong to a unique guild of ancient artists and are speculated to be as old as 6000 to 8000 years old! Archeologists identify these pictographs (rock paintings) as the Barrier Canyon Style, named for their location of discovery.
How could a primitive society make such stunning art?
What do they mean?
These images do not depict living human beings, but transformed anthropomorphic forms, alien to our world view today. Their meaning may be explained by the “shamanistic trance state”. When the shaman is in the trance state he is said to see with mystical eyes – presence of evil spirts, the cause of illness, and site into the past and future.
